Our Team

Jon Hjelmstad - President & Principal Owner

Jon is a licensed professional for over forty years with Hjelmstad Insurance Agency. A retired farmer himself, Jon specializes in Farm, Home, Auto and Commercial policies. He is a former President of North Dakota Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) (2016 - 2017), and served on the advisory board for North Star Mutual (2016 - 2019). Jon’s passion is to provide the best possible service to each client.

Brody Hjelmstad - Vice President, Licensed Agent

Originally from Thompson, ND, Brody moved to Fargo while he attended Minnesota State Community and Technical College where he attained his Associates Degree in Sales, Marketing and Management. Upon graduation, Brody worked and soon managed the highest revenue generating Tradehome Shoes in the region.

Brody, a fifth-generation licensed agent, has been licensed for 10 years and specializes in Home, Auto, Farm, Life, Long Term Care, Crop, and Commercial Insurance.

Nancy Johnson - office manager, licensed agent

Nancy has 31+ years of insurance experience. Nancy worked for Hatton Insurance Agency out of Hatton, North Dakota. Hjelmstad Insurance acquired Hatton Insurance in 2017, where Nancy continues to manage and service the Hatton community.

Our History

Hjelmstad Insurance Agency was founded by Clarence Hjelmstad in 1948, in Thompson, North Dakota. Clarence’s career began by selling Farm, Home, and Inland Marine policies for the company his father helped found - Walle Mutual in 1896. A full time farmer, and an entrepreneur at heart, Clarence and his son Marvin found immediate success in selling Farm and Personal policies to members and farmers in their community.

Marvin, who was President and CEO of Walle Mutual prior to it being acquired by North Star Mutual, helped the Agency regionally scale by securing contracts with national insurance companies.

Today, Hjelmstad Insurance is currently owned and operated by Marvin’s son & grandson, Jon and Brody Hjelmstad. Hjelmstad Insurance currently represents numerous top rated local and national insurance carriers, have licensed agents in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Arizona, and offers knowledge and skilled expertise in Personal, Business, Farm, Crop, Bonds, Flood, Life, Long Term Care, and Specialty Insurances.

Hjelmstad Insurance has been serving the insurance needs of our communities for over 75 years, and will continue to evolve our offerings to seamlessly fit the necessities of our community and farmers.

What is an Independent Agent?

How can I make sure that I have coverage for my valuables?

When speaking with your agent to set up your policy, any valuables you are concerned about and our agent can review your policy and recommend changes to ensure your valuables have proper coverage.

Do I need to get a new appraisal to renew or change my coverage?

No. You do not need a new home appraisal during the renewal or coverage change process.
